"Showing the way, Teaching the truth,
Experiencing the life in Christ"
Why the Church Exists
(Ephesians 3:20-21, NKJV)
“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever.”
I. The Singular Purpose of the Church
The singular purpose of the church is to declare, reflect, and ascribe glory to God by telling the world what He has done for mankind through His Son! That’s what Paul meant when he wrote, “To Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, for ever and ever” (Ephesians 3:21, NKJV).
Scripture reveals three primary objectives the church must pursue as we live out God’s purpose for us—evangelism, discipleship, and worship!
II. Three Primary Objectives of the Church
Scripture reveals three primary objectives the church must pursue as we live out God’s purpose for us—the purpose of giving Him glory. They are evangelism, discipleship, and worship!
Evangelism. Evangelism occurs when the church uses creative and innovative methods to communicate to non-believers the “Good News” that Jesus saves. Evangelism is a high priority for the church, because God doesn’t want anyone to perish. Peter wrote, “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (II Peter 3:9, NIV).
Discipleship. Discipleship occurs when the church equips believers to reach and equip believers…to reach and equip believers…to reach and equip believers…to reach and equip believers. That’s the process Jesus was describing when He said to His disciples, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:19-20, NIV).
Worship. Worship occurs when believers express to God from their hearts His great worth! Sadly, people who know how to authentically worship are so rare that God is conducting a global search for true worshipers. Jesus said, “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him” (John 4:23, NIV).
As the church of the living God, we are called to give Him glory. Paul clearly explained this truth when he wrote, “To Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, for ever and ever” (Ephesians 3:21, NKJV). We are personally responsible to give Him glory “in the church” by participating in evangelism, discipleship, and worship right where we live…within the sphere of our personal influence. We can also extend our “glory-giving” beyond our personal reach by prayerfully and financially supporting missionaries who go to the regions beyond to evangelize non-believers, disciple them, and motivate them to engage in authentic worship! For that reason, ODC’s elders have agreed to support Phil’s missionary ministry with a gift of $600 for 2013.
